I believe it's called a network interface card.

  1. Do you have an RJ45 connector on your computer? It should look much like a US modular phone connector. Most machines made in the last five-seven years sport one. For reference, the connector will look like the one in this link:

  2. Click on Start Menu, then right click on My Computer.  Choose Properties.

    Click the Hardware Tab

    Click the Device Manager Button

Under Network adapters, expand by clicking the + sign

Look for a device with the word "Wireless" in it.

Then search for that device on google to see what WiFi it supports (e.g. A, B, G, or H protocol).

  3. Well you will need to find a CAT-45 ethernet cable.  Then look on the back of your computer and see if it fits.  Most EVERY modern computer will have it!

Try google images and type in "NIC" or "cat45"

If your computer is less than 5 years old it will definately have it.

  4. Look on the back of the computer. Look for a jack hole...like like a phone jack hole but this one is wider and bigger.

  5. Your laptop most likely has a NIC (network interface card) unless it is very old.  Look for a port on the back that resembles a phone connector, but is slightly wider.  Also it will probably have two tiny LED lights which are typically green and yellow.  They won't be on until you connect something, but they should still be visible.  Hope that helps!

  6. What you are looking for is an RJ45 jack. It is similar in appearance to the RJ-11 jack that a telephone uses, but is larger because more wires are involved.

This Oxford University web site has a good side-by-side picture of the two. http://www.balliol.ox.ac.uk/comp/network...

If you don't have an RJ-45 connection built-in to your computer, one can be added either through a USB port or by installing a card into your PC. You can see some of those at http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.... (Look for PCI and USB versions as you most likely won't have PCI-e or PCI-x. [If you did, you'd almost certainly have an Ethernet adapter, too.]).
