Her right ear has this dark brown waxy stuff inside. It does have a sour odor to it. She shakes her head a lot but does not seem to be in any pain? Should I take her to the vet? I have Opi drops that I have been using 2 times a day. Thank you.

  1. You can't tell yourself, the vet needs to do tests so she can be prescribed the correct antibiotics.  And if she has an infection, it is very painful.  Those drops don't help her at all.

  2. You need to see a vet for this.  Even they can't tell by just looking what it is.  They take a swab of debris from the ear, heat fix it, stain it in 3 dyes and look under the scope, they will also make another slide with a mineral oil base to look for ear mites.

once they know what the infection or mites- is made up of, they can show you how to properly clean the ears, with the correct ear flush, how to apply meds, and make a follow-up appt.

many people skip the follow up, only to find that down deep the infection has not cleared and they need to repeat the treatment- only a vet using an otoscope can see down to the ear drum to see if it is all clear.

  3. Since ear mites are microscopic in nature, the only way to tell for sure is to take her to the vet.  Yeast infections require a culture to see what kind, and infections also need vet treatment.  The best thing to do for the dog is to take her to the veterinarian and find out what the problem is, then treat her accordingly.  Good luck!

  4. It sounds like ear mites, but my dog has a brown waxy stuff in her ears, it smells and she shakes her head but she doesn't have ear mites, they are just dirty and I clean them every other week.  So to be sure you'll need to see the vet.

If she's shaking her head constantly then it is probably ear mites.

  5. Take her to the vet. It sounds like she has mites and she is probably in pain. The vet will be able to give her an antibiodic.

  6. Yes - Take her to the Vet.  If she's shaking her head, then she IS in pain - Dogs are masters of disguise when it comes to hiding pain.
