Question:

How can I tell if the redness and swelling from my new tattoo are due to an infection?

I recently got a tattoo on Saturday on my ankle/leg, it's larger than any I've had before so I wasn't concerned when I had redness and swelling around the joint but it's almost been a week and the top of my foot is swollen and the edges of the tattoo near the lowest part of my ankle are still red and have a small amount of heat. No discharge other than the regular ink/fluid. When is it an infection or just normal healing?

  1. As an artist, I would have given you a report on how to treat your tattoo.

You should wash a couple of times a day to keep the scab at a min, then you apply some bacitracin, no sun until your skin looks normal, and no more getting a tattoo from this person.
