  1. My heat and air technician "fogs" the system to check for leaks.  I guess when he blows the smoke in the unit, any leaks would have smoke leaking from them?  Best thing for you to do is call a technician to come out for a maintenance visit.

You're right to want to get it energy efficient before winter comes, because once the temperature dips, it takes FOREVER to get a technician to come out then.

  2. Climb up in the attic with a flashlight and inspect the duct work.

The chances are slim that there would be a "hole"in the duct work.

The transition collars sometimes leak a little but that's it.Good luck.

  3. what kind of duct work do you have some are all metal some are the insulation with the plastic coating on the out side if you have metal you can go around to all the joints and take them up if you have other kind go around and look for rips in the duct work even if a small hole fix it will make a differencece in the long run

  4. you can get a smoke test or a pressure-vacuum test

  5. you will have to trace each ductwork and see if air is blowing out. Also check where your airhandler is. To see if there is air coming out around the door.  Also if you keep your temp. on your t-stat down couple degrees lower it will help with your bill.

  6. you can get your system checked (and cleaned, if you choose) for a minimal cost. around $100 in my area. it's money well spent. good luck!
