How do I go about tracing my Indian back ground?My grandmother, my mother's mother always told me that she use to live on an Indian Reservation in Nova Scotia, and I would like to be able to find out everything I can.Would I need to live on a Reservation before I could get a card saying that I am A Mic Mac Indian? I hope some one can help me. Thank You

  1. The Mormons keep all birth and death records and offer this service to anyone who asks.  Start looking there and they may have suggestions where else you might look.

No, you need to go to the tribe and ask.  If your grandmother lived on the reservation they will have your heritage there.  Each tribe is different, but they can tell you at their Indian Services Center about getting your card.  Depending on how much "indian blood" you have, you can qualify you and your children for medical care, houseing, food, ect.  Each tribe differs so you'll need to go to the tribe to find out.  If it's too far away, the tribe more than likely has a website with a phone number and mailing address for them.
