I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 DVR and need to copy a portion of a recorded show to my computer. There is a USB port in the front of the DVR, but then what? The DVR only seems to have an option to record to VCR.

FYI, my computer runs on XP.

  1. Hi Lulubell,

You need a device like DVD Xpress.

With DVD Xpress you can transfer your video to your hard drive and then edit it if you desire. DVD Xpress comes with basic video editing software. I got mine at Sam's for $59.95.

I saw a newer model at WalMart recently. It was the DVD Xpress2. I think it was $39.95 but I am not positive. You can check one out here http://www.usb-ware.com/ads-dvd-xpress-d...

You connect the composite output of your DVR into the DVD Xpress and connect the DVD Xpress to your computer via a USB cable.

  3. If it is a Dish DVR you can plug an external hard drive into the DVR and record programs to it. You cannot transfer the files to a PC. You also have to pay a one-time fee of $40 to be able to use this DVR to Hard Drive feature. If you do it, be sure to get a HD that has to plug into AC not one that just gets it's power through the USB port.
