How can I trim 20 seconds off my mile in 3 days?

I have Freshman volleyball tryouts Monday..3 days.

The first thing we do is go on the track and run our mile..in under 8 minutes.

I've been running for about two weeks and have trimmed off 24 seconds but am still getting 8:20 almost every time.

I HAVE to have this 8 minute mile down unless I don't want to make the team.

  1. it's going to be rough to get it down that much in 3 days. the good thing is that since you aren't a runner by sport, you should be able to decrease your time faster. I think the first important thing is to be sure you are eating right and sleeping enough.try to avoid really greasy and heavy food. running one mile doesn't require you to eat anymore carbs than usual, so don't bother with that. just try to stay healthy. you probably want to throw in like a decently pace 2-2.5 mile run tomorrow, and a fast mile on saturday. i would only do some light warmups or a half mile jog on sunday. monday morning eat a really light breakfast. (maybe just half a granola bar and some water) and warm up right (i few minutes of slow jogging) and just give it every thing you've got. you'd be surprised what you can pull out of yourself when it really counts. just be prepared to push yourself when you get tired.

  2. My running advise:

-carb-load the night before: pasta or any other high carb food.

    -Stay hydrated at all times.

-Keep a 2/minute lap pace, and have someone shout out your times as you pass.

    And good luck.

  3. You will be amazed at how well adrenaline alone works for decreasing your time.  Hopefully, you will be fine.  But I suggest you take the day before tryouts OFF from running.  You need fresh legs.  Eat whole foods, NO processed food, no fast food, no soda.  DON"T carb load the night before.  Eat light 2 hours before running, avoid dairy, stick with english muffin or toast.

At this point, there is not much you can do as far as training goes.  Think positive.  RUN like your life depends on it!

    Good luck!

  4. rest the day before and the day of the race eat a banna half in hour before the race and run the best you can

  5. work ur @ss off for 1 day while breathing in thru the nose and out the mouth, and then rest the next. carbo load as much as you can and breath in thru the mouth and out the mouth, you'll feel light as air. i normally, when i feel overworked from running all week, take 3 days off and then eat a lot of carbs. as soon as i run, i feel like i can run forever.

  6. your best chance at your best time is to run even splits which I suspect you havent done so far, figure out what your split should be, maybe just under :60 per 200m and have someone calling them out to you so you know when to pick it up or ease down to stay on pace
