Alright, so I have an anxiety disorder, and sometimes my medication doesn't help as much as I would like. I'm very anxious at the moment to the point where it's painful. Does anyone have any suggestions that may help me calm down and relax?

  1. You're paying for the meds just as if they were for pain or nausea or infection; tell the Drs. your feelings and ask them to adjust them.

Over time, over weight changes, and even other non-anxiety meds mixing in, they may not work as the day they were prescribed.  Doses are trial and error on their part and they need your feedback.

Head in for a tune up!

In the mean time - find an NPR radio channel with a classical music format...^|^

  2. Play a game or read a joke, thats what I do when I am stressing or very anxious.

  3. I suffer from an Anxiety disorder too.

    no fun, is it.

    Here's what may help.

Try to breath in for exactly six seconds, hold it for three seconds, exhale for six seconds, and hold it again for three seconds before starting all over until you calm down.

    It's a chi thing.

calms ya down quite nicely, I find.

  4. Ask a friend or relative to give you a back-rub, including neck and shoulders.

Learn relaxation techniques / exercises.  First you tense certain muscle groups, then you purpose to make those same muscles go limp.   Start with your feet, and work your way up your body.  Each time you move up to the next area, and purpose to go limp, include the muscles you have already done.

Purpose to breathe slowly.  Start with big breaths, let out slowly, then change to average slow breathing.

Choose to eliminate the use of angry or loud music with a prominent beat.  If you do listen to cheerful music, keep the volume very low.

Learn to give thanks or praise.   Write in a journal 3 things each day you are thankful for.

Pray to God.  Hand your anxieties over to Him.  Allow His peace to calm your heart and mind and body.

If you are still holding on to a worry, write it into your journal.  Close the book, and do not open it....leave your worry there, and don't take it back.

Eat, exercise outside daily, and get adequate sleep.

Find something to read that will calm you, learn to recite the words to yourself.

  5. Hi,

What I usually do when I start getting an anxiety attack is get out of the house and go exercise. Additionally, I listen to a relaxing cd during exercise or my sleep.

This program has made wonders with my anxiety problem:

  6. Do a hobby! Something that you like can help you or just crash down on the couch and read or watch some tv.

  7. Just light up and fly... if you know what I mean ;)

  8. You need a distraction. Try listening to your iPod (if you have one) or other music that you find soothing. Concentrate on good thoughts and that this anxiety won't get the best of you. Take deep breaths, in thru your nose exhale thru pursed lips. Sometimes a nice warm bath can help. Distractions! Good luck and I sympathize. :)
