I got a 1st gen iphone activated by At&t. I will be traveling to Europe (for a long time so maybe i'll get T.Mobile or Vodafone or something else.) and I want to get the phone unlocked to use with their carriers!!

I have not updated the firmware ever, 1.1.1 is what i have.

Can I unlock it?

If yes how do I do that?

  1. Unlocking an iPhone can be tricky and I would try to use professional services before you go so you can rest assure that your phone will work for you overseas without any glitches.  Check out Gammoth because they unlock all kinds of phones .. even the original iPhone with 1.1.1:)  Hope this helps!

  2. you can unlock it.  first, jailbreak it.  then get a sim card attachment to unlock it.

  3. You sure can unlock it, but I'm not sure if you can still find the program that unlocks for 1.1.1 software.  I would update your phone and then download the pwned program.  You can find out all about it at iphonehacks.com and might be able to find the older program to unlock your 1.1.1 firmware.  If you can somehow just update to the 1.1.2 firmware you can go, on your phone, to jailbreakme.com and do it all over your phone.  If you choose that route then you need the anysim program that you will dowload from installer that will be on your phone.  *Don't pay anyone to unlock your phone*.  It is a simple process if you just read around you can find all the information you need.
