Question:

How can I upload/view my videos on a Sony Camcorder that I don't have software for?

I borrowed a Sony HDD dcr-SR40 camcorder from a friend. She gave this to me, not realizing she had thrown away the software for this long ago. I desperately need to view the images and edit the footage for my economics class, which is due in just a few days.

I have windows XP and have looked online for a download, but am coming up empty. When I try to view the video with my windows media played, it tells me there is a "Codec Error".

I tried to download a few different things, but none of them worked. Could someone point me in the correct direction to search or download?

Much appreciated!

  1. The software you need is available on Sony's site

    http://www.pixela.co.jp/oem/sony/e/image...

as for trying to view the videos you can use VLC media player which you can download from the link provided

    http://www.videolan.org/

The software that is included with the cam normally all it is, is a video editing software if you don't like sony's video editing then just download any 3rd party video editing software, once u have done the editing just burn it onto a dvd and you're good to go.

  2. You could try converting the video to .wmv with Super.  Failing that you'll need to buy an editor.  AVS Video Editor is cheap and does a reasonable job, Sony's Vegas Movie Studio is more expensive, but it's a better editor.

  3. You need an MPEG2 codec.

Have you tried this player yet?  So far it has played everything I can throw at it:

  4. Have you tried Sony support?? See the link below>>>>>>
