How can I use 'NetBIOS' and 'nbtstat' to log into another PC?

Can I these two commands to log into any PC that I know the IP address of?

If not, how can I change the settings of the remote PC(that I need to access) so that I can access some of its folders?

Also, what are some other commands that can be used to access other PCs? For example, I'm connected to a LAN network. Any tricks to access other PCs in my LAN?

Thanks:)

  1. To log into a Windows PC, you use Remote Desktop.  It's in either

    Programs->Accessories

    or

    Programs->Accessories ->Communications

    on Windows XP, depending on how old the box is.  Run it, enter the name of the computer in the dialog and click connect.

    The computer you're logging in to has to have XP Pro or higher,  the Windows 2000 and XP home don't have the server.   To enable it on the remote computer, log on as an administrator and right-click 'my computer', click 'Remote' tab, and check the box marked 'Allow users to connect remotely to this computer'

    To access folders on another computer, the other computer has to 'share' them.   Right-click a folder, click 'sharing and security, and on the 'sharing' tab, click the 'share this folder' radio button.

    Then you can access the folder by from another computer by either :

    1. opening 'my computer', selecting tools->map network drive and entering '\\<computername>\<foldername>

    2. clicking start->run and typing the same thing as above and then clicking OK.

    NetBIOS and nbstat you don't need to worry about.
