you just need to get a ipod converter to convert avi to mp4 for playing on ipod,  I always use Aimersoft iPod Video Converter to convert flv

video to MP4 video, it also embeds an iPod manager that can transfer

video to iPod directly without iTunes.

You need a video converter for iPod.

You can't, cause iTunes won't convert videos for you,  try search a video converter on google and convert the AVI video to MP4 for iPod.

Ipod only support mp4 and H2.64, so if the video is not the format, you must use a third part software to convert. I think the Cucusoft DVD to iPod Video Suite is your best choice, it can rip DVD movie and convert videos in any format to iPod with fast speed and high output quality.
