How can I use metal (magnetic and non-magnetic) materials to bend or alter a magnetic field?

I am looking for a way to alter a magnetic field using other metals.

I am trying, in the long run, to use this to block off or "short circuit" part of a magnet's field.

Anyone got any knowledge to share with me on this subject?

Any magnetic material will alter a magnetic field it is placed in.  To 'block off' as you put it, or 'screen' a magnetic field is a common thing to do.  Try this Wiki article, for instance.
