I want to play a movie that I have downloaded from utorrent. But when I open the torrent, it goes to the windows media player....but the windows media player doesn't have a sound. So I want it to go to the VLC media player instead. But it won't go to the VLC because it is always directed to Windows media player? Do I need to uninstall windows media player or is there another way?

  1. right click, in the pop up menu scroll over "open with", then choose VLC player, if it not an option click "choose program" and select it from there.

alternatively start VLC and open the downloaded file

  2. No you do not need to uninstall Media Player. In order to open the file in VLC, just start VLC and drag the video file to the player window. The movie should start playing.

You can also press CTRL + O while in VLC and browse to the video file you want to open.

  3. The other answers are all correct, but when right-clicking to "Open With" make sure that the box "Always use this program to open this kind of file" is checked so that VLC will be the default player.
