How can I use the cable internet already hooked up?

I recently moved to a new house and the cable is still hooked up. My neighbor told me the people that lived there before had cable Internet so i thought it must be hooked up still if the tv is so i went to walmart and bought a cable modem and from what the lights on it say it is getting the internet signal, but there is no connection to the internet on my computer. The details on my computer say it has obtained the lease and everything but there is just no connection. How can i get it to work without having to call them cause if a call them im afraid they will shut it off.

The cable internet's contract mostly likely could have already ended.

Obtaining the lease does not mean that there is a connection.
