Question:

How can I volunteer to help Amputees in my area?

One of my buddies is a victim of an explosion in Iraq, and he volunteers in his spare time to help other victims.

However he doesn't help other soldiers (he says their is already a ton of money and manpower already going to that right now, so he didn't feel like he was making a difference)...

Instead he volunteers to help like pediatric amputee victims of car crashes and stuff like that. Right now he's working with a couple of high school kids for example with their rehab.

I think it's kind of cool what he does in his spare time, and I once was a medic back in the day so I'm not entirely useless in hospital or rehab setting, and I'm looking for some new volunteer work to do (I worked at a charity stable that helped kids with brain and behavioral disorders and things like that but they're cutting back on staff and volunteers because they sold some of their land and facilities).

So how might I go about finding out about programs like what my friend does, but in my area?

  1. Im sure there are plenty of ways you can give them a hand!

  2. The first logical step would be to ask him to check with the programs he is involved with and ask what they know of similar ones in your are.  Another possibility would be to contact nearest children's hospital and ask if you can be useful there in this capacity or if they can suggest somewhere.   Your local school system may also know of young people with this sort of need.  In general they would take your name and let the parent contact you vs giving you a name and contact info because of privacy concerns and not giving out student's personal info.     I'm also wondering if there could be a program for young amputees that uses riding which would definately be a good match for you.
