Question:

How can I wash and dry clothes in a sustainable way?

I always wash in cold water and line dry my clothes - those are obvious and make a big difference, reducing the energy I use. I hang up my clothes if I've worn them briefly, so they air out and can be worn again.

What else can I do, that won't cost a huge amount?

I've been putting together some info on this at http://www.appropedia.org/Washing_and_drying_clothes - that's a wiki page, so anyone can edit. Any input appreciated!

  1. What about your detergent? Do you make your own or buy a biodegradable / earth lovin' one? That's about all I can think to add. Good luck!

  2. If you don't want to use energy, you are in the right direction by line-drying your clothes. But to save more energy, instead of using a washing machine, just wash your clothes by hand and then line-dry them. It's a pain but it saves electricity and DEFINITELY lowers your bill. It even helps the environment more. So try that and you will be saving electricity and helping the environment at the same time.
