  1. There is only 2 safe methods.  First is to get a small tiller and till between rows.  Or secondly, cut the bottom off a plastic 2 liter soda bottle and remove the cap.  Spray round-up through the top opening.  That way, you won't poison anything you wish to keep.  Next year, use raised beds full of composted soil.

  2. you can use weedblock,  or wet newspaper, and put mulch on top....it really works. sometimes I use both. love flowers, but hate to weed them.

  3. If you are sick of pulling weeds, you do not show much enthuiasm for gardening. So why do it in the first place. gardening should be a joy not a chore, and includes taking the rough with the smooth. There is no practical labor saving way to maintain a domestic vegetable plot, which compares with the mechanical methods used in agriculture. So get on with it and stop whinging.

  4. One method is using weed killer chemicals, unfortunately though, that means whatever chemicals were sprayed on the ground could potentially be absorbed into your vegetables. Another method commonly used is torching them. Weed Torches can be found at many places such as Amazon.com and gardenshoponline.com.

  5. From one hate-to-pull-weeds person to another:

I heartily recommend a scuffle hoe.

You can buy them at any hardware store for about $15.

I would NOT be without it.  No bending.  No straining.  And you can clear grass and weeds in seconds.  All you do is "scuffle" it on the ground ( hence, the name ).  I promise you what was tedious and time consuming before will take only seconds.  I use it for clearing beds, maintaining the edge of beds, weeding, you name it.

Compared to herbicides it is easier on the environment, no waiting to plant once you've cleared a bed, no overspray of poisons onto desired plants and you get a mini workout.

  6. I have one of these:

  7. In a garden without herbicides or tarp, there are always some weeds.  Remember first that weeds only become a problem when the interfere with the growth of your vegetable plants.

With that said, I use something (I don't know the proper name) but is like a three pronged rake and dig at the center of the weeds with it...shake the dirt of the root of the weed...and discard the weed.

It doesn't work for tiny weeds, but those don't interfere with my plants.  It also works best when the bed is dry (less clumping).

In summary, it's almost impossible to have a weed free vegetable garden without constant presence.  So spend 5 minutes a day getting the big ones (or a couple of hours on the weekend) and it'll be fine.

  8. You might try keeping more of the unplanted areas covered with some type of an organic mulch. Mulching is a wonderful way to prevent weeds from becoming a big problem. It also helps plants retain moisture and keeps the soil cool. An organic mulch also serves to replenish nutrients to the soil.
