I'm 17 years old, going to be a senior this year and I'm definitely interested in pursuing Journalism when I go to college.

What are the different types of Journalism out there? Could you name some and tell me about them? I'm really interested in current events, like the kind of articles you get on CNN.com or MSNBC.com.

I want to start regularly writing articles to build a portfolio but I need to know where to start. Should I start reading newspapers and other articles to get ideas?

Should I just read a news story and then write my own take on it after doing research about the entire topic? How do you sit down and write a great article?

I want to start writing about 2 to 3 a day to practice my writing skills and develop my style. So please if you have any advice, help me out here!

  1. Is there are a journalism program at your high school?

Anyway... there are many types of journalism. What you are talking about it just straight up news. The articles found on those sites are usually from the Associated Press. They've got a strict style and you've got to follow it.

I wouldn't be re-writing a story to put your take on it. That's opinionating it which it doesn't need to be. What you could do is re-write them, but as a reporter. Using that for your information, etc.

BUT! you might want to see if your local paper needs any help for this summer. That may get you started somewhere.
