Question:

How can L.A. residents stop wasting water?

TURN OFF THE WATER WHILE BRUSHING YOUR TEETH. It's so stupid -- there's no reason to leave it running. Wet the brush, turn off the water, brush your teeth, finish, then turn on the water and rinse.

You'll save up to 30 gallons a month doing this.

With the LA Drought in full force, it's time to stop being stupid.

  1. Take a shorter shower or skip a day.  Flushing the toilet less also helps.

  2. water recycles itself.

  3. We can  turn off our Jacuzzis on Tuesdays.

  4. Shower with friends!

  5. Toothbrushes are one thing, but what about showers. If your showers use alot of water, take baths. It may seem weird, but taking a bath vs. taking a shower will save at least 40 gallons. Unless you take 5 min. showers. Also using public pools can save water, so you don't run up your bill. Filling your dishwasher can save you some time, so you don't waste money for alot of money you may spend on each dish.

  6. Okay here's a nice one, but dangerous, if it is illegal for you to post posters on the walls of that city, if you happen to live there. Write there the ways that they can save water. The theme is "Someday when my water is gone". You tell them some facts about water, and make sure that it will creep them out. Being frustrated won't help those residents change. Someone like you should act about it, because you are concerned.

  7. I just came back from a mission trip to Haiti.  They have a MAJOR water shortage.

To conserve they turn on the shower, get wet, turn it off, lather up, then turn it back on to rinse.  They also flush less frequently.  They have a saying, (kinda gross), if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down.

BUT, they're in a desperate situation.

And they fill a cup with water to brush teeth.  You can't have anymore than that cupfull.

  8. I agree, that's an argument that I've had with my wife for years...but there's more you can do.

Xeriscaping your landscaping with plants that don't require watering anymore than nature provides them with.

Planting as many trees as possible, everywhere, not palms, not grass, TREES! Hound your local government to plant more trees around town, they gobble up carbon, filter the air, and keep precious water from evaporating away.

When choosing a house, building or car color, always go for lighter colors as they help to reflect heat back into the atmosphere instead of absorbing it like darker colors.

L.A. with all its buildings should turn to "Green Roofs" they make the buildings more efficient, filter storm water and help to conserve water.

Replace appliances with energy efficient ones, low flow faucets, toilets, and shower heads.

Replacing all light bulbs (except dimmers) with compact fluorescent bulbs helps conserve energy, which allows for less C02 into the atmosphere which helps clear the air...

There's much much more you can do, you seem to already be pissed off enough to want to be part of the solution, so your on the right track.
