Yours is actually a good question, Louise.  This is an example of a figure of speech incorrectly applied.  To say that something is "next-door" to something else means that the two things are bordering on one another and Mexico DOES border the US.  However, the concept of "next-door" implies that the bordering is side by side and your are correct in noting that on both "sides" of the US are located oceans.  Someone with little or no knowledge of geography or someone who couldn't see a map might be confused hearing this description.  So, language, incorrectly used, can confuse rather than enlighten.

  5. I dunno. Blame the map makers for tryign to convince us that mexico is that big...
