obviously, someone at Team Obama didn't want the public to know that the junior Senator from Illinios refered to Jewish people in such a vile and demeaning manner. The phrase has been edited out of the 2004 edition of the book

No doubt about it it's intolerable and offensive, but it's not meant as insult per se. By no means defending Obama here.

The comparison is to emphasize the way of life in NY, the interactions between the communities. Meaning he is emphasizing the reality & how politicians perceive it. If he had said 'blacks and jews' or 'nigg8rs or jews' ---- it takes away the weight & essence of what he is portraying.

This is just from that paragraph, and to actually understand what he said or meant, a person would have to read the whole chapter.

If it is the case that it was meant to be offensive then 'yes' this issue must be highlighted & explanation sought! Again I think it's highly unlikely.
