Question:

How can People be against Government Subsidized Healthcare?

People seem sadly misinformed about Universal Healthcare

Many use the European model, which is inefficient. In America, people would have to pay for their healthcare, but the government would help out, as they should.

A good country has healthy citizens.

If a man gets sick, and is unable to work, he shouldn't have to destroy his credit to pay medical bills! That is what I see the Democrats proposing.

Some companies give health benefits. These are largely inadequate, only covering a few thousand dollars. The only jobs that give good healthcare are social servants, teachers, military retirees, and G-men.

  1. In America, unfortunately most of the population seems to be denial with regard to their responsibilities, healthcare or lack thereof is just one of many. We have the highest cost healthcare system in the world, yet the majority of Americans either have inadequate care, or no care at all. We are 29th in Mortality, but choosing our Doctors(whom we cannot get any meaningful information about their competancy.) does not seem to bother most of us or the AMA.

We just like our goverment and the members of the AMA, have become selfish, lazy, and irresponible. Here are some examples:

    1. Most of us don't want to pay more taxes but will stand by and watch the National Debt soar, the goverment use social security funds to pay for general fund programs, and the quality of our own childrens education continue to erode.

    2.  Less and less of us show up at local, state, and federal elections. We also do not want to spend the time and energy to really learn about issues, and candidates, but would rather listen to talking heads, and sound bites.

    3. We complain about the cost of energy but have continued to drive in large wasteful vehicles, live in large inefficient houses, and design our communities in a manner that requires us to commute long distances to our workplaces. We have known about this problem for over 30 years, but continue to look for quick fixes such as drilling oil in Alaska and on the Continental Shelf, rather than invest in new technologies, change the way we live and work, and work towards true energy independence.

    4. We insist on background and drug tests for the people who police or communities, teach our children, and drive commercial vehicles, but require no disclosure of a Physicians competency to operate on you other than a license, issued to this person by a board of other Physicians, who are self regulating. Physicians then blame Lawyers for the high cost of their malpractice insurance, while defending the right to keep incompetent colleaques in business, by not allowing the public access to their records. Then the AMA opposes any form of a Comprehensive Health Plan, because of course they do not want to be questioned about their competency, and how dare anyone question their judgement. Yet we buy this baloney and our healthcare cost continue to increase, and access for many becomes out of reach. Such compassion for the needs of the many!

Simply put we are no longer the same Nation that rewrote the pages of History by demanding independence from the most powerful country in the World,  lead the Free World to Victory over Facism and that met the challenge of putting a Man on the Moon. We have instead chose to be complacent, self serving, and child like, as we seek to lay blame for our current problems rather than take the courage to conquer them and work together unselfishly as our Fore-Fathers would have done.

  2. If that's what you think, many of us know better, and if you want to pay more federal taxes for it, be my guest. I do not.

  3. By Government Subsidized Health Care, I take it you mean Universal Coverage, or coverage for all citizens.  You need to be very specific.

I notice that there are many ignorant people answering this question.

Companies can't be relied upon to provide quality healthcare, because for the most part, collective bargaining is not standard in the United States.  In order to force companies to provide better health care, you need to have stronger employee associations and unions, and you need to have a much higher portion of the workforce in them.

Medicare is an excellent system and shows that government-provided health care can work.  I lived in the UK for a time and was completely covered by their health system.  I actually visited a doctor's office there and it was clean and efficient.

Additionally, the Americans do not have better access to health care resources that those in other industrialized countries.  Read about it here: http://www.commonwealthfund.org/publicat...

Health care must be paid for one way or another.  The American system is the most expensive system in the world, with mediocre returns on our investment.  $5,300 is spent in the US every year per person for health care.  That is 53% higher than Switzerland, the next highest country, and we do not have a 53% longer life span.  In fact we have the 27th !!! longest life span.  Cuba has the 28th longest life span, while only spending 186 dollars per year per person.

    Read and weep:

    http://www.commonwealthfund.org/publicat...

    http://ucatlas.ucsc.edu/health/spend/spe...

The only conclusion is that those that support what we have now are ignorant, or they are somehow reaping the benefits of extremely inefficient health care.

I personally would pay higher taxes for good, high quality, efficient health care.

  4. maybe rich people do not need it but everyone benfits.

  5. well man i agree but u should work hard and u know the darwins theury of the survival of the fittest....so strugle for ur survival...and for the part of question i agree that a good govt helps thier people...so if u have such thoughts u should persuade people for it...fight for ur right...but remeber also u should take care for ur selves govt will take care for you..........

  6. The way things are going in this country now, any redesign of the health care system will just be an opportunity for government and wall street insiders to loot the system. I picture the same people who ran Fannie Mae taking over.

  7. It's a good idea if you are part of the "entitlement" crowd in our country.  Why would you want that kind of government control in your life?  They can then tell you how to take care of your own body.  Move to a communist country if you need government that bad in your life.  That is utterly PATHETIC.  I don't need government for anything.

Government screws up everything it touches.  Now you want them to s***w up health care in America?  Look at it this way, the government runs our education system.  Now we have the lowest test scores in the industrialized world.  They run the department of energy and we are having an energy crisis and a so-called global warming crisis.  We spend billions of dollars per year on defense and they couldn't even keep you safe on 9-11.

Government in general is incompetent, wasteful, and bureaucratic by nature.  They are PATHETIC!!!

Stay out the welfare lines.  Quit looking for hand-outs.  All you need is Freedom.

  8. For those of you who question the government's ability to handle health care, do note that almost everyone on the VA system think its great and that is socialized medicine run by the government. Also note that the Medicare system for seniors is exaclty the same as Canada's single payer health care system except the US system is for seniors only. The old people know something good when they can get it.

  9. As far as being "misinformed" I would say that you're right there too.

Point me towards one, just one government-run program that is run efficiently, or well.  And you want to add health insurance to these "geniuses" as well?

Good government = less government, not more.

  10. because people with jobs have to subsidize the government before it can subsidize people without jobs

  11. Chuckles- I've heard nothing but BAD things from people who have to use the VA.  I can't imagine them thinking it's a good thing.

I'm with the others who have responded (for the most part).  OUR government is NOT going to go about universal health care in the best way for its citizens.  I don't support it.  I DO support employees fighting for more health care coverage through their employers (I agree w/your statement about who gets the good health care), and I support free and/or subsidized health care for children.  As a teacher, it's extremely frustrating to see some of my students receive inadequate health care because their parents can't afford insurance.

  12. i don't think Matty is the narrow minded one, no people complain about the government over stepping its bounds, where exactly does the constitution give the government the right to be in the health care business?

  13. I have lived in Europe and in Singapore. I have also lived with the high cost of health insurance as a small businessman in the USA. The universal health care overseas is at best third rate in Singapore and not even that in Europe. I broke an arm body surfing in Singapore and it took close to 36 hours in hospital before they got around to x-raying the arm. In Europe my wife delivered in the ambulance while the d**n doctor stood by the wind break to have his smoke. He was on a break and could not be bothered. Her Doctor same guy who had been doing prenatal care.  I went to the ER in Lubbock TX with kidney stones had a massive heart attack on the OR table. Flat-lined twice for a total of 7.5 minutes, was revived and got 5 stints even though I am allergic to the Iodine dye they normally use. Why don't you people realize that the USA has the best Health Care In the world? You and the Democrats are trying very hard to F**k it up with universal health care. The government which gave us the Postal Service, the IRS, and the Patriot Act in control of Universal Health Care will give us a disaster. The least common denominator which is a bad thing to happen.

Edit: chuckles, I am a vet and I will not use the VA. The health care system for our Vets is a disgrace and the people in  charge of the VA should be shot for allowing the practices there to continue.

  14. Government health care actually increases the price of health care, by circulating more money into the industry. This makes it harder to pay for. Free or inexpensive health care was provided through charity by good doctors before the government began subsidising it.

It also decides the type of healthcare you may have - what kind is legitimate for them to fund. It is also a way for the government to favour certain industries, especially pharmaceuticals.

If the government favours the wrong type of health care and disallows funding for others which may be effective (particularly "alternative" medicine), it will make everyone sick.

The Democrats are jus as elitist as the Republicans. They don't have your interests. Health care funding really only benefits the industry. It provides them with more customers.

The Republicans actually expanded health care funding more than the Democrats before them. They passed legislation proposed by the Clintons which they couldn't.pass.

Read my source, a short article. It's provides a very good overview of the problem.

  15. So all of America should be forced under penalty of imprisonment to pay for yet another government program they neither want or need?  Wow thats so very undemocratic of you.  Why is it you freeloaders are so quick and willing to spend other peoples money to get something you can pay for out of your own pocket?

  16. why do you want to give money to some one just so they can give it back only under the condition that you do the things they want for you to get it back plus they keep a little of it for their valuable decision making, plus a little more for overhead costs

that just doesn't make sense to me

i can make a lot better decisions then someone Else when it concerns my life.

  17. I'm against it because I fund the government and I don't want to pay for other people's health care.  And any entitlement program the government operates is ALWAYS corrupt and rift with waste and abuse by the non-contributing drains on society the programs  are designed to help.

With government sponsored medical costs, the costs to those of us actually paying will go even higher.

  18. And where would the government get this money from to help with healthcare hmmmmmmm? They'll get it by rasing our taxes! Universal Healthcare sounds good on paper but it's not going to work in the real world....... it's been a failure in both Europe and Canada... wake up and smell the coffee. Universal Healthcare will end up killing more people than it could ever save.

  19. You gotta be crazy, its proven over and over again that socializing medicine and its practices doesnt work.I'll use Canada. Why do they come here for operations, you ever wonder about that?Maybe because by the time your doctors appointment has come, your dead already(great plan).

Another aspect is if you smoke will the government decide that they wont give you healthcare,or maybe if you drink,or are slightly obese, wouldnt they consider this choices to make your policy null and void?

As for the government helping out on the bill, how many people go to the emergency room daily, that cant pay.Are they denied treatment....NO!

Why would anyone in their right mind want to give away that much freedom and control over their lives to the government?
