How can a Helicopter take off from one point while an Airliner has to speed on wheels before taking off?

  1. The helicopter's "wings" are its propeller - that's what gives it lift.  You need air to be moving over a wing, in order to get that lift.

    An airplane makes air move over its wings by rolling.  A helicopter makes air move over its wings by spinning them around really fast.
