Question:

How can a Homeschooler get a basketball scholarship?

Since I'm homeschooled, I've never played on an organized team, but I'm a very fast learner (if I could get on a team, I would do my best to adapt my game to it) and I've never lost a 1 v. 1. (I live in Miami, so it's not like I'm playing against a bunch of white guys named Richard. lol) I recently played 21 with guys that were a lot bigger than I am (5'10" 155), and I won. The final score was 21-2-0. I've loved streetball all of my life, but this recent win has really got me thinking about a basketball scholarship. By the way, I'm 16 years old.

I would really appreciate help from anyone who has any experience with this... Please don't give me a bunch of stupid answers telling me I'm not good enough etc... I'll find that out myself. Thanks.

  1. Try playing AAU ball which is highly competitive and will provided you with essential contacts for networking for tryouts and hopefully a basketball scholarship.

Keep playing pick-up ball and one on one too. It's important to play on some form of a team to learn about leadership dynamics and team contributions. Coaches and recruiters look for that stuff too./

Also, go to open try-outs for colleges. The coach and scholar-shipped players will be there and give you a chance to play with them. You might end up with an offer.

    Good luck.

  2. yea, try getting into an organization or team of some sort.  You will most likely need to play for a team with a lot of publicity, for the college scouts to see you.  Just don't give up, and keep trying, you never know.

  3. Check to see what's available in your area - in ours, there is a homeschool league that plays in the city league (both competitive and rec) against private and public schools.  There have been quite a few scouts checking out the kids on the teams, and some have gotten some nice offers.

I would check with the homeschool groups in your area to find out what's available as far as sports.  In order to get a scholarship you'll need to learn the technical plays (that you wouldn't normally pay as much attention to in streetball), but you seem motivated enough to bring it :-)

Hope that helps - and good luck!

  4. Get on a city team.

  5. Try getting on a team.  If a scout doesn't come try asking a college to send one over.

  6. Even though you are homeschooled you are allowed to play for your homeschool....That would be the only way to learn the team skills in college ball...Also, you would also try out for the college team when you get accepted and then in the second year of college perhaps get a scholarship...

  7. Most scouts concentrate on schools, so your chances aren't great.  But if your area has any youth groups with teams, try out for them -- I think that's your best shot.

  8. Check out the NCAA homeschool eligibilty info

    Good luck:D
