Should I be concerned about the major bruising and pain I am experiencing after having blood work done?

The nurse had a very difficult time taking blood for my routine blood work on Monday. She had to stick me twice and really work it to get enough blood. Now my arm is extremely bruised, approximately a 4 inch by 6 inch area. It is extremely painful, both in the bruised area and in the rest of my arm including my wrist. I am wondering how concerned I should be... Is it okay to just deal with the pain and wait for it to go away or do I need to go to a doctor?

  1. My girlfirend just had a baby, and the IV had trouble going in, and she has significant bruising still(the baby is 3 weeks old now)  So I would say it is probably normal, but if it makes you feel better, call and ask the nurse.

  2. That is appalling.

i think it would be smart to see a doc. soon.

that is just way too much damage - i think the nurse must have stuck the needle all the way through the vein.

don't let that nurse try to take blood anymore; find someone else.

You may need to ask the blood person to use a butterfly needle.

If they don't know what that is, they don't have enough knowledge or experience for you to use them.

and warn them that your veins are hard for some people to hit.

    PS

this is NOT a time to take aspirin for the pain.

use one of the other painkillers.

  3. no reason to be concerned ,
