Question:

How can a boxer beat an mma fighter? help!?

A friend of mine and I have been talkin c**p back and forth the past year, and it looks like we're finally going to spar. He got new eq, so we're going to spar out in his back yard. I've boxed for a couple of years now, and I'm pretty sure i'll hold my own while we're standing up. He, however, wrestles and does MMA, though I don't know how well. Any tips on how I can beat him? I know it won't be easy, so don't just sit there and say "you can't." I'm quicker than he is, I just need to know techniques that can keep me on my feet / keep me in the fight while we're on the ground. Oh, and do I need to do anything special to keep my distance, or should I act like he's another boxer? If it helps at all, I'm a lot more comfortable as a outside/speed fighter, but I can dance inside if i need to, cuz he's a little smaller than me.

  1. When he goes to tackle you lean forward and keep your body above his while backing up.  you should then be able to fall on him and pin him to the ground.  then punch the h**l out of him.

this is a long shot, but it is better than nothing.

    check out this video:

  2. Yeah, you're pretty much ****** if you're going by standard MMA rules. But if you can keep your distance, prevent him from even being able to get a shot on you, and learn to sprawl (its when ur opponent shoots in and you shoot ur legs back while keeping your upper body pressed above him, holding on to his chest or whatever you can grip. basically like you're about to do an up down.) u might be ok. i don't recommend kicks unless ur really good with them, but a straight kick can help u keep the distance. Stick to jabs and use outside punches. Don't clinch with him!

  3. well starting off you have an educated question and you know what your talking about. You have the advantage some what standing up. Dont let him take your legs and keep moving. Remeber a boxer in a street fight never wants to go to the ground. keep moving around and tire him out with hard jabs. and as stated above hit him with clean shots to the headwhile standing up or when he trys to take your legs. Also keep a close stance, he will try to spread you out while standing up.When you get taken down ( and you probably will) dont let him beat you in a hold, and block your face. Use your speed to get back up to deliver a barage of punches in your favor.Remeber this isnt expert advice but i hope it helps a little. Good luck and buy eachother a beer when its over

  4. all you need to know is know how to sprawl.  Look it up on a webpage or something.  that should help.

  5. if this is going to happen soon...you better keep it standing...if you cant knock him out fast

  6. keep a good range on him, and dont stay still

keep moving, circle, side to side

if hes gonna try and take you down, tis gonna be harder for him

  7. Definitely don't treat him like another boxer. Try to keep the fight on its feet but know that he is gonna try to take you down. Defend takedowns, in the event it goes to the ground get in you guard, cover up, try to get back to your feet. Good luck!

  8. fight him in a boxing ring with boxing rules, u'll never loose as long as u are standing up..... i hope!

  9. Sprawl and Brawl

    see Forrest Griffins fight

he prefers to box with people and keeps it that way

check some of Mirco Cro Cops fights for good Sprawls and Liddel who obviously keeps things standing as well

also i know you guy get taught to duck your headto avoid punches, try not to you leave yourself open to a lot of different things in MMA by doing such

if you have reach use it, throw that jab like crazy keep him back, set up the combos you need

and avoid staying inside, the closer you get the easier it is for him to take you down

im rooting for your friend strickly based on i practice MMA also

however good luck and i think if you can sprawl when needed and avoid the takedowns you will be good to use your speed and win

  10. Dude, people can say whatever in the **** they want about mma, because im a second dan black belt in tae-kwon-doe, and this kid at my school who is a junior who has taken mma for 2 years, i am a sophmore, wouldnt stop talkin **** bout how much better he was than me, and finally, he decided to come at me, and bam, i stuck a roundhouse kick to the side of his head, and he went down like a sack of bricks.

There isn't anything special bout mma fighters.

Here is what u do. Stay on your toes, bounce around him, keep  a jab in his face, and try to keep him off balace. When he comes at you to take you down, u have 2 options.

    1. plant your feet, and put everything behind your back and hit him square in the face.

    2. side step, and land a combo of jabs and backhands to the side of his head.

Just remember, stay confident, u can beat this guy, and i'll tell you something, mma is for people who dont want to take the time to do an actual martial art. I know this because i have taken several mma classes. Just keep bouncing, stay to the outside, and keep the jab in his face, and remeber, watch for his charge to take you down.

  11. 1) To tell you the truth, if you think you are gonna get whooped, then  my advice would be do not fight him any time soon....talking trash and not backing it up is better than talking trash and getting your *** whooped... take the next 6 months at least and start some kick boxing which should be a quick transition for you and also take up some MMA yourself....if you have more time like several years, I'd say learn some judo or jiujitsu and then MMA....then you'll be more confident fighting this guy.

    2) Fight 2 fights, one with boxing rules and one with MMA rules...

    3) If you have no time and you still insist on fighting him...then I would say stay on feet, and go head hunting...most MMA fighters weakness is taking a punch to the head because they are not full-time boxers...so keep punching him in the face and keep your distance so he cannot grab you or lunge at you...if you get taken down, keep punching his face and try to get up as fast as possible...

  12. The best way would be to learn some jiu jitsu, however if he goes to take you down be sure tocatchhis arms in yours, by putting your arms under his shoulders, then push off him, or throw him aside.  Also  you could try throwing uppercuts when he shoots in.

  13. if your lucky you can knock him down/out with a couple punches

once he takes you down its all over for you so i suggest you learn how to SPRAWL

  14. Kick him in the nuts,

    gouge his eyes out.

  15. your best bet is to keep him at a distance with quick jabs i would say.  avoid getting in close, cuz he'll either take you down, or throw knees in the clinch, neither of which you have to worry about in boxing.  if you do end up in close, try not to let him get underhooks (his arms under your arms) because that will give him leverage to take you down.

if you have some time before this happens, i would suggest trying to find another buddy that wrestles, and just practice defending take downs with him, so that its not totally foreign to you.  good luck...you're gonna need it.

  16. first off boxing is a different animal than MMA...box him with boxing rules...if you go MMA rules, then you have to train that route.

  17. work on some basic grappling.

work on getting up if he gets you down

and work on improving leg strength

  18. The boxer can beat an MMA fighter if he hires another MMA fighter to stand in for him.  If that's not possible, then the boxer needs to keep the MMA guy at a distance.  If the MMA fighter gets in close (get ready for those knees and elbows) or if the fight goes to the ground, the boxer will have no chance.  It's why no boxers have gone to MMA.  They wouldn't stand a chance.

  19. Mike, the simple fact that you're online pleading for help means your friend has already won the argument.  End of story.

Revan, the fact that you knocked out one idiot doesn't prove anything except that you knocked out one idiot.  I really hope you knocked some sense into him.  And I love the sound effects too.  Bam!

The fact that you went to a few MMA classes meant you were either curious or worried or both, because with your attitude you definitely weren't there to learn anything.  Not as a student at least.

So when's your match with George St.Pierre, I want to know so I can order the pay-per-view, because if MMA is really nothing then you should be able to beat him no problem and I want to see it.

  20. When he tries to take you down sprawl. Heres a tut.

  21. Box  him.  Do not fight his fight.  Keep him off-balance and see if you can keep him backing up.  He's going to go for the take-down.  Every time he goes for the take-down, make him pay for it.  Use your speed and throw 3-hit combos.

  22. keep distance come in for manly jabs and a couple combos keep it quick u let him get the advantage he will take u down and yur basically fuked if he does take u down punch again and again until you get the upper hand wrap your legs around his back and just keep swinging look for a knockout buddy

by the way i do boxing, jui jistui, muay thai, and guna start krag magra good luck

  23. lol good luck buddy mma is the ownage of all fighting he knows how to use his feet and his fist and when i was doing mma they tought me how to break a arm good luck buddy =p

  24. Naw, you wanna remain an out fighter... because then your not using your speed.  He is going to try leg sweeps/ and leg take downs, if not grappling for your legs altogether.... i suggest adding some kicks to your toolbox to get him to keep his distance and punish him when he goes for those leg sweeps or if he lunges for your legs to kick him and keep in a defensive position where he doesn't know where to look high  or low..

  25. punch him as hard as he can in the nuts

  26. I hate to say it, but you're in some trouble.

He's got a lot more tools to work with than you. Depending on what strategy he usually employs, you may have to worry about kicks and knees along with takedowns, which would be problematic. Also, not knowing what kind of wrestler he is could REALLY play against you, as you may prepare yourself for the wrong form of takedown.

But as others have mentioned, your best bet is to try and remain on your feet. If you hit the ground, your chances of 'surviving' are slim to none.

There are 3 different routes he could take, in order to bring the fight to the ground.

    * He could shoot in at you, which is what everyone here seems to expect.

*He could go for a takedown from the clinch

    *He could pull guard

And, of course, he isn't necessarily limited to one method.

Let's break down each of these options, starting with the double leg takedown. The basic idea is that he will change levels (to get under your center of gravity), off-balance you by ramming his shoulder into your midsection, then take advantage of that loss of equlibrium in order to bring you to the ground.

Unfortunately (for you), the last part (bringing you down) can be done in a variety of ways. And if you react poorly or sprawl incorrectly, you'll be taken down despite your best efforts.

That's right, even the sprawl is fallible. In fact, for you, I wouldn't even consider that to be your most important focus.

You biggest concern should be distance. Any time that you can touch him with your hand and vice versa, you're in shooting range. Make sure that you dont linger in shooting range/in the pocket. Be there only while you're attacking, and get the heck out of dodge once you're done.

Also, continuous lateral movement is your friend. If you maintain distance while moving sideways, it will be very hard for him to shoot.

That alone isn't enough to thwart every potential takedown attempt, but it is a good start. The next thing to consider is level changing. If he's a competent wrestler, before he actually shoots, he'll lower his body. What you must do, in response to this, is square your hips with his, drop lower than him (by bending your knees), and meet his body with underhook(s).

If you can only get one in, that's fine. If you can get both in, that's better. Stand back up and use your underhooks to drag him back up as well. If he can't get below your center of gravity, he can't take you down with a shot.

Nonetheless, he's got more experience than you in the clinch, so disengage ASAP.

Sprawling is a good option too. But even when you sprawl, getting an underhook in there is better than not.

Unfortunately, he can go for more than just a double leg takedown. But dropping levels to meet him is always a good idea. For almost any takedown, he needs to under your center, and you prevent him from doing so by dropping your weight.

And then, of course, there are clinch takedowns. In this realm, you're pretty screwed. There are too many to cover. Plus, if he throws knees to your thigh, torso, and head to set up his takedowns, you'll get frazzled and be easy pickings. The best thing that you can possibly do for this is to avoid the clinch like the plague. Though, that's much easier said than done.

As for him pulling guard, you've got to find a way to stand back up. Try to keep good posture (keep your back straight, keep your head up) above all else. Be wary of your arms. Don't stick them out too far. Try to break his guard, but DO NOT use your arms/hands to do this. He will triangle choke you. This technique is your best bet.

Don't try to pass his guard, though. Just break it open with the knee wedge then stand back up.

All in all, be aware of the fact that you'll have to play a defensive game to avoid being taken down. When you do go on the offensive, keep your combinations short, and remember to get back out of range. If your feet get planted, he might come under your punches with a shot.

And most importantly, when you have this sparring match, keep it fun and friendly. Both of you should try not to go overboard, and both of you should wear appropriate safety gear (mouth piece, cup, gloves, shinpads for him, maybe headgear).

    Good luck!
