How can a car's registration be expired?

My boyfriend was pulled over and received a ticket for expired registration. His tag is OK, because he renewed in December (DOB) and our car insurance policy is in effect because I personally make sure that the bill is each month when due. Please give us some advice and why and what to do asap. He is currently sitting on the side of the road with police as I am typing this :(

  1. It would help if we knew what state you were in and if the car was registered in the same state. laws very from place to place. Could it be his license that is expired?


  2. If you renewed your tag and rcvd the little sticker with the updated month/year, then that means that you renewed your tag/registration. your best bet is to call the Dept of Motor Vehicles for your state.

  3. Did he replace his old registration with the new one? and was it signed?....thats how....he can have good tags or whatever but the actual physical registration needs to be the most current one....

  4. If you're registered but didn't put the tag on your license plate, you'll get a ticket for expired registration.  Ditto if you paid the fee but didn't pass the smog test yet.  Depends on the state, in California it's a $10 fix-it ticket, in NJ, your guy would be on death row.

    I heard a story once of a guy who got stopped for expired reg, so he was going to be leaving the scene in the back of a police car.  While the cop did paperwork, he got on the phone and called a buddy, who paid his reg online.  Asked the cop to check a second time, cop came back "You're free to go."

  5. You cannot get a new tag unless your registration is current or you steal one.  So if you paid the current registration but do not have it in the car.....then you have to go to court and show the judge proof in order to have the ticket tossed out.

    Be sure to take an online traffic school.
