How can a collection service legally freeze your bank account?

My bank account is frozen by a collection agency, and how can that be legal.

  1. It is very legal if you owe money elsewhere. Pretty much all banks are connected to chex systems. If you owe money at another bank the account is frozen and funds are put towards your debt.

    Now if you do not know of any outstanding debts get a credit report, contact your bank, and maybe even the police concerning fraud cause your ID might have been stolen.  


  2. maybe they got a court order. did you ever get a notice from them that they were taking you to court? did you sign any papers or agreements with them? I would not think that they legally could do that without the bank having a court order to do so. ask your bank and if they do not have the correct orders then contact a lawyer ASAP.

  3. Request your free credit  reports from annualcreditreport.com or call them toll free @ 1-877-322-8228 for all 3 free reports. If there is a judgment, it should be on your credit reports. If you were never served, go down to the court house and ask where the papers were serviced and if  anybody signed them.
