How can a high school student get a science mentor?

i'm a high school student really interested in physics, and i want to be able to research so i can submit a project at intel or siemens westinghouse. however, i really want a professional mentor so i can have lab opportunities and guidance. do any of you have any suggestions in how to get one?

  1. You should ask by e-mail and then follow up with a meeting. Also speak to your science teacher and the director of science for your school district./


  2. Visit the websites of your local university, and (or lab), and see if they have a "Community Outreach Coordinator" or someone else with a similar title.  (It could also be "Educational Outreach Specialist.")  This person may have a list of scientists who are eager to work with young people.

    If that doesn't work, look around for scientists that are doing work that you are interested, and contact them directly.  Don't be shy, many of them are sick of writing grant proposals and overseeing experiments, and would be very happy to meet an enthusiastic young person.
