How can a phone number has letters in it?

I saw this one when watching Last Comic Standing: 1-800-FUNNY-68. I'm not sure the exact number but it's something like that.

All the keys on a phone have letters assigned.  Just look on your phone keys. So if it is a "D' you would dial 3

On most phones on the number buttons 2-9 have three or four letters printed on them, smaller than the number.

2- ABC

3- DEF

4-GHI

5-JKL

6-MNO

7-PRS

8-TUV

9-WXY
