  1. Courage and independance come from having a good self esteem. The students need to really trust the teacher and feel comfortable with her/him. Developing independance in preschool starts with making sure the students carry their own stuff from the car to school. open their own lunches and set them up. Can do tolieting duties on their own, and other routine procedures that are developmentally appropriate.

  2. I agree having open ended projects and play. Allow the child to be self sufficient. Putting on his own coat, learning to zip or button, putting all his papers in a back pack and doing things without being told. At different times congratulate him on his self sufficient behavior. Allowing mistakes and allowing the child to correct them..

  3. Offer activities that are open-ended. Like a pattern block activity, where the children are counting and tracing, etc.  A child that is more advanced can take it further and get more out of it.  He might be counting up tp 15, while another child is just counting 10.  Open-ended activities allow children independence. Also giving children choices is very important.  Even if it is that the child chose not to clean up, well then they learn that there are natural consequences.  The child chose not to clean up, so they cannot go outside until they have cleaned up their area...

  4. give them choices then congradulate them on the choices they've made...

  5. by encouraging free play with some risk taking, i.e things to climb, jump from, balance. Allowing for child lead rather than adult lead activities.

  6. by giving them real life examples!
