  1. An object floats if the buoyancy on it is more than its weight. And the buoyancy on the object is the same amount as the weight of water which is replaced by the object. So a ship can float on the ocean if the weight of the water which is replaced by the ship is more than the weight of the ship.

The information following is a copy of wiki. It can help you learn more about the buoyancy.

In physics, buoyancy is the upward force on an object produced by the surrounding fluid (i.e., a liquid or a gas) in which it is fully or partially immersed, due to the pressure difference of the fluid between the top and bottom of the object.

The net upward buoyancy force is equal to the magnitude of the weight of fluid that is displaced by the body. This force enables the object to float or at least to seem lighter. Buoyancy is important for many vehicles such as boats, ships, balloons, and airships.

  2. buoyancy

  3. The ship I was on, the USS Constellation, weighted 185,000 tons.  It was 1,047 feet long (1/5th of a mile).  It carried 5,338 sailors at full complement.  It was made of steel.  The ship extended about 150 feet above the water and carried over 100 aircraft.

The reason it was able to float is because the water it displaced was equal to all of that weight.  The ship extended 40 feet below the waterline.

  4. because its densitty is less then water wat happens if u throw a ballon in the water it will float because the ballon is light for tis size also ships fill up some of there rooms with air

  5. Ships have empty compartments that are water tight.  These compartments are the outer layers of the ship.  The weight of the ship and it's buoyancy  is determined by the ships engineer.  These compartments are flooded or pumped full of sea water to cause the ship to float and float on an even keel.  In other words, if the ship lists towards the right, then water needs to be added to the left side to even the ship out.  These compartments are called "voids" and "Voids" rooms full of trapped air or water.....to keep the boat a float!

  6. The shape of the ship allows it to float. Imagine a ship that was just a big block of steel, If you put that steel block into water, it would  sink because it is denser than water. Ships are built with a hollow shape. The amount of steel is the same, but the hollow shape decreases the boat’s density. Water is denser than the hollow boat, so the boat floats. Shaping the block into a hollow form increases the volume occupied by the same mass, which results in a reduced overall density. The ship floats because it is less dense than water.

  8. If the water the ship displaces weighs more than the ship itself then it will float.

Large ships are very heavy, but they're so large that they displace a lot of water. Ships are always less dense than water, because most of their volume is air.
