I am permanent resident of Canada. I'm Nigerian, and my mother-in-law has been visiting me in Canada from Nigeria. She will be returning to Nigeria, so I bought a ticket to Lagos, that stops over in Milan, Italy. I did not think it would be a hassle to obtain a airport transit visa. We have called the Italian embassy in Edmonton (and Ottawa) and we were told they only give transit visas to residents of Canada (residents/citizens of Canada do not not even require such visas), and that we had better try and book another flight via the UK. We are at loss for what to do, because, this ticket cost over $1000 and we can't afford to lose it. By the way, it's a fixed, date, time etc ticket.

  1. the Italian embassy has no reason not to give it to her since it is a transit visa only;

    CANADA

    Ottawa - Embassy of Italy

    Address: 275, Slater Street, 21st floor - Ottawa (Ontario) K1P 5H9

    Tel.: 001613 2322401/2/3

    Fax: 2331484 2348424

    Website: www.ambottawa.esteri.it

    E-mail: ambasciata.ottawa@esteri.it

    check this link;

    and then this one to get a transit visa:

  2. Check the Canadian websites for Schengen visas.

    These are primarily "short stay" or "transit" visas aimed at those who are not members of the EU to pass through EU countries with only a single visa, instead of obtaining one for every country on the itinerary.

    The link appended is for an international visa issuer; I'm not sure if this is the correct way for you (and your mother) to go about it. But it wouldn't hurt to look.

    And please take note of the last sentence at the bottom of the page:

    " ... It is important to note that a visa service of this kind, like all visa services, is not regarded as a guarantee of entry into a member state. Holders are still subject to immigration control and may be refused entry. ..."
