  1. You can't control it.

  2. Women who are HIV+ are given medication during pregnancy, and then often have C sections.  These 2 things reduce the risk of transmission from mother to baby to about 1%.  (Amazing when you consider that mother and baby share a blood supply for 9 months.)

  3. Only 25% of all HIV-infected mothers transmit the infection to their baby, and the risk depends on the mother's viral load at the time of delivery. So you can have an HIV-positive mother who's delivered 2 children with both children infected, or only one or no infected child.

The risk of transmission can be brought down to 2% by giving the mother antiretroviral therapy.

  4. Absolutely you can prevent your baby from getting HIV, take your antiretroviral medications exactly as prescribed even missing one dose can make a difference, you will get IV meds at the time of delivery, and will need a Cesarean section. All these things reduce risk for baby.
