  1. Cells possess certain genes that turn on and turn off cellular processes.  Normal cellular regulation keeps this process in balance.

    If damage occurs to the regulatory gene which turns off cellular reproduction, the cell may become permanently stuck in the "reproduce" mode.  It will then copy itself, with the mutated gene, and it's progeny too will be stuck in reproduction mode.  Tissue masses stuck in reproduction are known as tumors.
