  1. if you mean getting it from petroleum then they use a process called cracking.there are two types of cracking ,thermal and catalytic.these process actually break or crack the high molecular weight hydrocarbons into low molecular alkanes and alkenes depending on the size of the hydrocarbon


  2. The most important commercial sources for alkanes are natural gas and oil.Natural gas contains primarily methane and ethane, with some propane and butane: oil is a mixture of liquid alkanes and other hydrocarbons. So alkanes occur naturally in petroleum and is not gotten from petroleum
