How can ammonium (or any other kind of) nitrate be extracted from urine?

it's crucial for our project,, please, if possible, state known and practical scientific methods..

  1. i can't answer this one fully, but i do know that centuries ago, people would go round neighbourhoods collecting urine, from which potassium nitrate would be extracted (salt peter). this would then be used to make gunpowder.

    it was especialy fortunate if you were able to get the urine of the local vicar / preist - as then the gunpowder would be considered blessed!

    - i'm not joking!

    this process can't be to hard, if they could do it centuries ago.

    i have a feeling it involves using soil somehow

  2. is nitrate even present in urine??

    anyways, well, if it is, it will be quite easy

    all compounds that are nitrate tend to be insoluble in water, so, add PbNO3 to the urine to form a precipitate traces of Iodide, filter the precipitate (if any), followed by AgNO3, to form precipitate of Chlorides, filter again, CaOH or Calcium nitrate to form precipitate of carbonates, filter, then you will have urea and possibly, nitrate ions.
