  1. A visa is not required for tourist or business visits to the UK of less than six months in duration.  Visitors wishing to remain longer than one month in Gibraltar should regularize their stay with Gibraltar immigration authorities.   Those planning to visit the UK for any purpose other than tourism or business, or who intend to stay longer than six months, should consult the website of the British Embassy in the United States at http://britainusa.com for information about current visa requirements.  Those who are required to obtain a visa and fail to do so may be denied entry and returned to their port of origin.  The British government is currently considering reducing the visa-free period from six months to 90 days.

as for the other EU countries? it is 90 days only.......

you cannot work while on a visit visa.

  2. As an American you are allowed to stay in the EU (of course including Britain) for a maximum period of up to 6 months.

You do not need a visa or a job before you go, once you arrive at an airport in Britain you are allowed entry, just register yourself at a local 'Home office' in Britain and you will be allowed to work for 6 months, then you can find any jobs there.

Its saying beyond 6 months that caused trouble, no probs up to 6months.
