I'm pretty young to be thinking about where I'll go to college, but it's never too early. I love England, and I want to go to a british college, like Oxford. Does anybody know what an American has to do to get into a british college? I'm homeschooled, by the way, if that changes anything.

  1. First of all I would suggest spelling British correctly, that might put you on the right track :)

Oxford is pretty much like any Ivy League school, except a little bit harder to get into.  You will need to ace your SAT/ACT tests and maybe some others as well.

Homeschooling might work out better for you, because you might be able to put some extra effort into the areas that you need to study to get in.  If you were in a public/private school, it might be harder to get private tutoring to tailor to your specific needs.

Otherwise, just check out the admissions page on the Oxford website.

And if that doesn't work for you, there are lots of great Study Abroad options to choose from.  I'm attending Abilene Christian University right now, and next semester I'm studying abroad in Oxford.  The best part is, I'll be in Oxford but learning from ACU professors so I don't have to worry about the Oxford application process and stuff like that. So keep it in mind!

  2. They can apply just the same as anyone else - through UCAS the November before you want to start (i.e. nearly a whole year in advance).

Homeschooled? Nobody cares. Fantastic extracurriculars? Nobody cares. Rich parents? Nobody cares. What Oxford want is the very top academic students. Take a look at their website for info on the sort of SAT I and II results you'll need to be considered (and do be aware that most people with good enough results to be considered still don't get in).

That said - go for it. If you can get in you will have a fantastic time.
