Ok, I have read tons of these forums on how people from america try to come to canada and want to stay here for a certain amount of time. My boyfriend lives in the states and I live in canada and he stayed here for 5 months. I am so confused on what he should say at the border so they dont hassle him. I know your allowed to stay for 6 months. How can he get an extension if he wants to stay longer?? Also, i know if you intend on working in canada you need a work visa, but he has an internet business... so how does that work if he wants to live here and do his business?...he can't? Does he still need a freakin work visa?? I dont understand this government bull and I live here!! Its stupid and it doesnt make sense. Does anyone have any solid answers? I also want to know how long would he have to wait to come back after visiting for 5 months?

HELP!

  1. basically the fastest way to bet him into canada is for you to get married. Applications are taking less than 12 months (if you apply as outside) and between 1 & 2 years (if you apply as inside).

contact the below yahoo group if you do get married and wish to do this route.

Canada does not have a fiance visa.

  3. yes, hello, okay calm down

I am currently in a similar situation, and am in Canada right now in the process of getting a work permit from within the country before my time here as a visitor is up.  I have been here for many months due to a government s***w-up with one of my applications.  I applied for an extension as a visitor with the CIC [make sure to go to their website all these forms and a bevy of information is there], paid a 75$ processing fee, then mailed the form to them.  Usually these forms are returned denied and you must leave the country in X amount of days.  However I forgot to attach the receipt of my payment to the application, so lo and behold four months later instead of a 'get out of canada' letter,  I get a notice in the mail telling me I haven't attached the receipt and would I please re-send it within 90 days.  So I can theoretically now stay here for the next 3 months, re-send the application on the last day, and possibly wait another 4 months for the application to go through all the channels to be returned to me.  That would mean +/- 1 year here!  This is one strategy, should he need to stay in Canada while applying for a work permit.  Which is step two.

The work permit will allow him to stay in Canada without paranoid government qualms, only you will probably have to consult either an immigration attorney or someone who knows what they're doing in that area in regards to your BF's line of work, though I am sure there are loopholes you just will have to exploit.  Also, he might have to apply for the permit from outside of Canada, if he does not have a job offer from within the country.   I do not know, once your typical six months expire, how long before you can return into the country - though I doubt its a simple in and out then in again through border control.

Yes, yes I know I hate the bureaucratic nature of things as well, but you gotta find ways to work the system to your advantage.  It's totally impersonal and annoying.
