How can an American move to Canada for a year?

I am an american, born and raised, and I'd like to move to Montreal for a year, learn french and just relax a bit. I am having trouble finding out exactly what I need to do first to make this happen. Most sites are talking about immigrating to Canada, i just want to live there for a year. I have savings, and I just want to rent a small place, not work, and absorb the culture. Apparently Americans don't need a tourist visa if staying for less than 3 months, but what type of paperwork (aside from a passport) do I need to move for a year?

Also, I have a car, a 2006 Honda Accord. Can I drive my car in montreal, or would I be better off selling it?

Thanks for re-inforcing  the stereotype about stupid mouthy  Americans, once again.

    For the original poster..........

Americans can VISIT Canada, for up to 183 days in any 12 month period of time. No visa required..Once again it is a visit, not a immigration move. Canadians  do the same thing every winter, when they VISIT Florida.

BUT you  will have  to be able to convince the  Canadian Border Security Agency inspector, at the crossing point, that you will NOT be  attempting to get a job here. My best advice is this, don't load your car up with all your stuff, bring a suicase or two, no stero or  TV .

Keep a low profile in Montreal, don't wear American sports team items, nor a YALE sweatshirt. Be as Canadian as you can be, and blend in to the culture. Stay off American politics in conversation. Learn some french phrases, try to read the french papers.

Drink Molson's, not Bud, smoke Players not Marlboro, eat ethnic foods, and learn to love "smoked meat sandwiches ".  Follow " les habs " not the Rangers, and for god;s sake don't try to understand the  Quebec separatists.

Go home whent your time is up. And tell your friends what a great time you had in  Montreal.

  3. Why the heck would you want to leave The best Country on Earth for a toilet in the woods?

  4. Regardless of why you want to go it is considered immigration.  Therefore, you need to see the requirements for immigration to Canada to know what type of visa you will need.  Go to the link I am providing to see what you need.  Yes, you can drive your car in Montreal but you will likely need to register it there.  I am providing a link for that too.
