  1. The title, basically. A king is a king and a prince is a prince. A King carries the style (form of address) of "Majesty" while a Prince is always some form of "Highness". There are many forms of "Highness", depending on what kind of family a prince belongs to (imperial, royal, ducal, etc). A king is always a sovereign/monarch while a prince is either a sovereign, the head of a princely family or a junior member of a princely, royal, etc family.

  2. A King is always addressed as "Your Majesty", while a prince is addressed as "Your Royal Highness." Also, the King will always walk in front of everyone else, while the rest of the royal family follows closely behind. Generally, most Kings are (with some exceptions) in their middle age, there are hardly any "young Kings" in their 20's or 30's.

Although it is true that you can usually identify them by "title", there are some monarchs like Monaco, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg that does not refer their head of state as "King." These monarchs goes by the title "The Sovereign Prince" or "Grand Duke." In addition, the term "head of state" is usually used to address the sovereign who is the representing their nation, while a Prince is just "a prince" or "heir to the throne."

Note: Nowadays, a King does not wear his crown in public unless it is for a ceremonial event or during his coronation. Most of the time, it is locked away in a secret value or on display for public viewing.

  3. a king has a crown......

  4. A king has a crown.

A Prince has a Chinook helicopter given to him by the MOD but funded by tax payers, which he can use to fly to stag parties with his drunken friends...

  5. The only way is by the title itself. There are no physical characteristics! The crown is only used during the coronation. Both Kings and princes wear military garb. You must listen to hear the title.King,Prince Regent,Prince... other titles are Your Majesty for a King and Your Royal Highness for  the princes...then you must fund out who the man is and what country he represents to find out the actual job description and duties.

  6. Purely by recognition of the personages involved. If you have no Idea what Prince Rupert of the Hutt River Province of Western Australia looks like, you could not distinguish him from King Leopold of Belgium.

  7. You will hear people refer to the king as 'KING' and the prince as 'PRINCE'. The two words distinguish the two dudes. Alternatively, the king may be addressed directly as 'your majesty' and the prince as 'your highness'

  8. A Prince becomes a King and once a King always a King, but once a Knights enough.
