  1. All I can say to all those people who think that the Union flag is something of shame is, if you live in the UK LEAVE at the earliest opportunity because if it upsets you that much, then by all means go and see if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

OK there may have been times in our past that may not have been that great but without British rule this World that we all have to live in would be a far more evil place than it is now.

What I will never understand is how some ungrateful no-marks have the audacity to live in a land and accept the benefits that a civilised society has to offer yet at the same time despise everything that its national flag stands for.

I personally find there's nothing worse in a person, than a cowardly two-faced back stabber who hasn't the guts to stand up and openly say in public what they actually think and believe in.

Edit: Also one post described it as the butchers apron, in that case what books would be his bench, I can think of a few.

  2. call it by it's correct name and stop showing your ignorance

  3. Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. (Wilde)

  4. i am =)

  5. I too served under the flag! And was proud to do so!Instead of those negative points; What about bringing up the areas where Britain served such as !The Russian Convoys,Yugoslavia,Greece as well as France and Italy!

  6. it is well named "THE BUTCHERS APRON" for all the blood on it

  7. i can,t say i am that proud of it......its a flag and nothing else

  8. Quite so sir, well said!  The Union Flag/Jack should be celebrated!

Anybody who says it is a flag of oppression is missing the point - ALL countries are guilty of oppression of some description.  What matters is what they aspire to now.

  9. Yes, i'm proud of the 'Union Jack' in our top left hand corner, as an Aussie I always give the Brits c**p at any given opportunity, but my Grandfather was in the RAAF as a Navigator in WWII and flew over London, defending the Mother Country. My other Grand father fought with the 2nd AIF.

Why did you guys 'forget' your own Army in Singapore though????? I can only wish that one day as an Aussie I will live to see a 'Green & Gold' Australian Flag with the Stars of the Southern Cross rising over our Blessed Country, no offence, but we grew up decades ago. Thank you!

  10. because modern day Britain has reach a level of modernization and boasts a social structure/setup like never seen before.  From the modernization point of view,  the nations citizens have way more important and interesting things to engage their minds on than the 'flag of Britain'.

If truth be known, the flag of Britain is seen as nothing more than old flag of colonial rule in many parts of the world.

Secondly a lot of people are not 'native' caucasian saxonian-germanic ethnicity wise,  whilst the majority of Britain is indeed of this ethnicity, small concentrated populace regions of major cities in England especialy, are not.  These people are justly proud of their own 'ethnical' backgrounds, so to suggest that they show 100% unconditional respect, admiration and love for a flag - and just a flag is laughable.

No it doesn't instill a sense of pride in me, its just a flag. Every nation on this planet has one mate.  Get with it.

There is not as big a sense of patriotism here (the UK, England especialy) as there is say, in the USA, China or even Australia.

Only time when we may show some patriotism is when the olympics are staged every 4 years, even then though - cmon be honest - are you an emotional wreck each time the union jack gets hoisted up and they play an anthem ?? or are you more concerned with a good sporting spectacle ?

The Union Jack.  Yeah, just look at the amount of 'history' behind it.  Theres some history alright,  history of colonising other lands and going to war with its people on countless occasions,  so its also stained with blood.

I reserve the right to feel indifferent about the Union Jack,  its nothing more to me than a flag and thats as far as it goes.

  11. I'm certainly proud to be British and have served under the flag for twelve years in the RAF.

However, I must admit it would be even better with a Welsh Dragon in it.

  12. it makes me smile how people from the old colonies slag the British off. they never seem to want to thank us for all the stuff that they take for granted now like medical science, combustion engine, telephone, TV, radio, railways. the list is endless....i suppose we are to assume they would have sat in their little mud huts inventing that stuff all for themselves eh!!.....i think the uk should start to work out what they owe us!! I'm very proud of what this country used to be. and very proud of our flag. for that reason i think labour should be imprisoned for treason 'every man jack of them' for the damage they have done to Britain and its people. join the British National Party and fight to get your country back. that's what ive done. if we don't fight were going to lose the country completely. the only flag your going to see flying is an Islamic one.

  13. I can not understand why trendy idiots always point out the negative parts of the British Empire. It did have it's faults and it also had it's virtues. Even Bernie Grant had to admit that being a member of a British Colony was the, "least worst option" he could not be sufficiently honest to admit it was the best option.I notice that some of the fiercest critics from the ex-colonies soon found there way into this Country because living in their own after independence was so unbearable. This is a tacit acknowledgement that they were better off under the colonial system. It is often conveniently forgotten that the Empire was not a particularly military affair but a trading concern. I will not apologise for the British Empire because in spite of it's faults it was a greater influence for good. You only have to see the ex-colonies with few exceptions reverting back to tribal warfare

For phoenixo,  the clever one. I call my flag the Union Jack knowing that a jack is flown on the bow of a ship in port. A Royal Navy ship flies the Union Flag at the bow and this is probably where its name or nickname comes from. A British Merchant ship flies a jack which is the Union Flag with a white border around it. It may interest some an phooenixo in particular to know that the British Mercantile Marine is quite correctly known as The Merchant Navy a totle conferred upon it by King George the V in recognition of the casualties suffered in World War 1

So yes I am proud of my flag although I detest the political party of Rommel F .

  14. not me sorry

    regards x kitti x

  15. I am, and for those who are not shame on them

Keyring,  learn about the UK before commentating, don;t you think other countries oppressed people, China, USA, Russia, to name just three. And many do to this day.

  16. The world is as civilized as it is only because of the British Empire (yes! I said Empire).  The English language unites India.  Those African countries that survived did so because of the training of the British that showed them self government. Yes things have fallen apart in many places but it is not the British that failed them, it is they that did not keep the rule of law that the British brought them.

I would wish to be a poor Bedouin in Egypt or a beggar in Calcutta in 1870 then either in those places in 2008.  Yes the British Empire gave the world much more then it took out!

  17. When we see the union jack displayed in Innocent country,s we have invaded and slaughtered their citizens for no reason other than to steel their oil I am ashamed. We continue to occupy these country,s and when they show sign es of fighting back they are called insurgents not freedom fighters.

  18. I am an American of English heritage and I have an English surname.  Several times I have heard the Union Jack referred to as "the Butcher's apron" and that always makes me a little squeamish.  But I guess for someone who is British of course they would be proud.  And why not, look at all the flags that are incorporate the Union Jack into their design.  You are right, that is a lot of history and the British did many things in very great ways.

  19. I was proud to be British until the present Labour government came to power. since then I can see that over the next two year, which is all that Brown has left, we will probably have more dictatorial laws from Brussels and the washed out blue EU flag imposed on us.

What is there to be proud of?

We have uncontrolled immigration, unwanted laws and the EU constitution imposed on us by unelected dictators, the taking of Billions to fund the criminal; EU without our being asked whether we want to be part of the organisation, England run by a Scottish dictatorship while Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland have their own parliaments.

Being British Pah! The Un ion is falling apart and like Nero Brown just fiddles.

  20. I'm not British, though my country has strong ties ... I'm proud of it, though I hope you don't mind, I'm rather fond of Old Glory as my 1st choice of flags.

  21. You really are a moron do you do history in school beating up children for speaking there own language is not something to be proud of. The british elites forced heroin on a nation viewed normal people as slaves while spending millions on food while others starved and you are proud. I just knocked you out with a truth fist

  22. i am proud of both our flags it's great when the football is on and everyone put them on their houses shame it's only then i left mine up for age just cos i love it and not afraid to say so xxxxx

  23. Having served for it and under it to bloody right!!

  24. There's good & bad history attached to it; we are what we are. Personally I feel more English than British.

  25. I still revere the Union Jack with me Gran's eyes.

    Cheers!

  26. I'm American and am proud of the Union Jack.  It's just so regal.

  27. To be fair, the amount of history behind it involves a lot of opression of other people (I'm not British, btw).
