Art is an expression of freedom (in theory if not always in fact) because the imagination has no limits and can cross fields and disciplines that other subjects remain constrained by.  In art you are not confined to the present, you can represent the past, what you think about the future, and things that are purely fictive or phantasmic.  At the same time art can be an excellent way to express political views freely - think of banksy and his art which often makes a social/political comment (about the middle east for example).  But always remember art can be just as much part of the establishment, just as traditional, just as ideologically driven as any other discipline - its about how you use a discipline that has the opportunity to push beyond traditional boundaries of representation (the way we think about the world).
