  1. The Princess Diana tribute had different words to the Original.

  2. It was his song and his to do with as he wanted.

  3. Yes it was made for Marylin Monroe, but when Sir Elton John made It for Princess Diana he just changed some of the words to "Goodbye English Rose" which  Diana was, and it says the same about her as it did to Marylin Monroe, both their lives ended to soon, and in such tragic circumstances

  4. It's his song.  he can do whatever he wants with it.  After Diana's death, he rewrote the lyrics to address Diana instead of Monroe and performed it at her funeral.

  5. Well first of: He's got the copyright. He can do what he wants.

    He basically went a head and changed the text.

    "Goodbye Norma Jean" became "Goodbye England's Rose".

    After changing the text up completely he just went ahead and rededicated the song to Princess Diana.

  6. That's what I thought also.  Although the song is special, but to recycle it to two different icons is pretty lame.  I think Princess Di deserved a better song, one that is composed specifically for her, something that should not be shared and not a "hand me downs".  I guess Elton wanted to be the first to sing a song in tribute to the princess and in haste, he recycled the song.  He should've just not sing it at all.

  7. Well of course he wrote this song years before Diana died. However it seemed quite appropriate for the life of Diana, who was done in by speeding papparazzi on motorcycles and a drunk chauffeur.

  8. because the public took it to heart at the time    symbolic  elton john did change some of the words .............in so far as a young woman dead before her time dying in tragic circumstances in both cases ................................and the origainal words were penned by Bernie Taupin as he was the Marlyn Monroe fan and new words also by him............

  9. Quite simply,he rewrote the words,the LYRICS, to honor Diana. The melody(musical notes) remained the same,but Marilyn Monroe could never claim to be "England's Rose," now could she? Elton John wrote new words that specifically honored the Princess of Wales.

    "Following the reading, Elton John sang a special arrangement of his song Candle In The Wind:

    Goodbye England's rose;

    may you ever grow in our hearts.

    You were the grace that placed yourself

    where lives were torn apart.

    You called out to our country,

    and you whispered to those in pain.

    Now you belong to heaven,

    and the stars spell out your name.

    And it seems to me you lived your life

    like a candle in the wind:

    never fading with the sunset

    when the rain set in.

    And your footsteps will always fall here,

    along England's greenest hills;

    your candle's burned out long before

    your legend ever will.

    Loveliness we've lost;

    these empty days without your smile.

    This torch we'll always carry

    for our nation's golden child.

    And even though we try,

    the truth brings us to tears;

    all our words cannot express

    the joy you brought us through the years.

    Goodbye England's rose,

    from a country lost without your soul,

    who'll miss the wings of your compassion

    more than you'll ever know."
