  1. Legumes (beans, peanuts, clover and others) have nodules on their roots that let them put nitrogen into the soil.  The nitrogen is taken out of the air and circulated to the roots.  This 'fixing' of nitrogen is important because it is an important component in plants.  Fertilizers add nitrogen to the soil in one form or another (urea, ammonia and others).  Legumes do it naturally.  Artificial fertilizers can burn the soil if not added properly, legumes can not.


  2. It's something to do with 'fixing' nitrogen in the soil.  That's all I know, sorry.
