  1. because if you get a suspect to get a cast of their foot and compare with a foot print at a crime scene

  2. differant people have different characteristics about there feet -size, width, stride pattern ,lengh of stride ,how they place there foot ,shoe pattern ,differences in the shoe pattern i.e.cuts or ware and tear ,weight angles and depth of the mark etc

Each one can eliminate suspects from the scene of the crime and together with other evidence can point to the criminal

  3. they can be used as circumstantial evidence, and also used to eliminate certain suspects.

foot prints can indicate height, weight and (obviously) shoe size, as well as indicating a certain brand of shoe.

  4. If you look at the make, size and the nicks and scrapes plus the way the tread has worn due to the way an individual walks, the pattern is individual.

This individuality has never been conclusively proven so the evidence is not sufficient on its own like finger prints but a good footprint cast will go a long way.

  5. We call them shoewear impressions, not footprints - footprints implies bare feet!

Shoewear databases are widely used by analysts, so class characteristics of impressions can be linked to a particular brand of shoe. Wear patterns may enable you to suggest that a certain individual wore a shoe of that type. Accidental characteristics may enable you to individualise the shoewear impression and get a match to a particular shoe. You cannot however PROVE that the shoe was worn by one particular person. Even from DNA analysis.
