  1. my son improved his vision as a kid from 20-200 to 20-40 in one eye and 20-60 in the other by doing vision therapy with an eye doctor trained in vision therapy.

Glasses do make your vision worst as it keeps them trapped at a certain refraction.  The natural eye moves back and forth and does not remain fixed like glasses make it.  This weakens the eye and most people wearing glasses start requiring stronger and stronger prescriptions as the eyes then worsen.

See the book Bates method for better eyesight without glasses mentioned by the other person.  It is most informative written by a true researcher.

    http://www.amazon.com/Method-Better-Eyes...

This book helped my son avoid glasses for over 10 years while he was under my care as it lead me to not listen to the doctors and be motivated to try to find someone trained it in as I learned there was another way than what the eye doctors who told me it could not ever be reversed said..

Although I was unsucessful finding someone trained in the Bates method, I did find the eye doctor mentioned above through calling the state college.  It took 20 visits and a round trip 50 mile weekly visit and daily exercises given by the doctor to bring about the vision improvement mentioned above by this eye doctor trained in vision therapy. each week he gave my son a different assignment and tool to help him improve his vision.\

So I know that one's vision can be helped, but the younger people have more success with the vision therapy that trained allopathic eye doctors using vision therapy use. But that listed below should help all ages and supplement with exercises found in Bates' book.

For improvement also do the following program by Dr Richard Schulze which not only improved vision but also cured diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glacoma and even people who were blind from birth or born with no optic nerve.

    1. take his eye wash formula as directed on this site in the eye.

    http://www.herbdoc.com/p57.asp

    2. also take this formula by mouth 2 droppersful (about 60 drops) 5 time a day.  You can make it yourself to save money,

To make the eyewash formula yourself, use organic or wildcrafted herbs only.  Use one part of each herb Eyebright, Goldenseal root, Rue flower,  Mullein flower, Fennel seed, and Red Raspberry leaf, and 1/8 th part Cayenne.

For example mix one tbs of each herb except for the cayenne use 1/8 tbs of cayenne or 1 cup of each and 1/8th cup of cayenne.  Mix the herbs (best not to use powders but cut and sifted..buy them in bulk herbs online or health food store coop where they sell by the ounce) and add 80 proof vodka and let it settle until it is 1/2 liquid at the top and one half herbs at the bottom of a glass jar adding more vodka or herbs as necessary.  Shake several times a day for at least 2 weeks or longer.  then strain through a cheesecloth and bottle, label and date it for 5 years from the date you strained it expiration.  It is good even beyond that date  though, Put some in as tincture bottle (brown or blue glass botttle eyedropper top purchased at health food store).

To take by mouth you can add the dose to a spoon of juice or water.  To use in eyes follow his directions at the link for dilution with water and the eye cup.

It may sting slightly.  this will go away.  Don't worry as he has used it with 1000 times that much cayenne and it never damaged the eye.  The only side effect may be the cayenne so increased the blood flow (this makes the eye temporarily red sometimes after use as it build blood (with its removal of waste and bringing of oxygen and nutrients) to the eye that it pushed the gunk clogging up the eye out and this may result in a few morning where eye is glued shut.  Simply take a warm washcloth and rub on the eye and then it will open fine.  Do not fear as I have used it and it is safe and fine. It is not an infection but the eye healing itself.

Once I accidentally got habanero pepper juice in my eye from my hands and cooking and could not open them for an hour but afterwards my eyes looked so clear and this gave me the courage to try the formula as I knew my eye would not be harmed and after that, it was nothing..just stung a few minutes.

He also says you can increase the cayenne in the formula by 1/8 part each batch until using  equal parts of all herbs if desired strength is needed,.

    3. Also take with  ginkgo bilboa (organic or wildcrafted tincture. (a tincture is a liquid extract of herbs and much better absorbed than a capsule) 2 dropperfuls 3-5 times a day.  the ginkgo goes to the head for more effectiveness

    4. use a slant board once a day to get blood to the head and increase circulation to the brain area

    5. drink 3 cups of freshly juiced carrot juice.

This program works best in a comprehensive program of an excellent diet, elimination organ cleansing and detox (lungs/kidneys/liver/bowel and blood cleansing and exercise program and other components of his incurables program.

See incurables program and the index here...he also has a book "there are no incurable illnesses" there.

These steps are taken from his save your life manual of the iincurables program and thousands wrote in to  say they were cured of all types of eye diseases.  He also recommends his brain formula, cayenne,  and superfood for blindness and eye problems..these are  found at his site herbdoc.com in the catalog

If anything helps, these suggestions should,

also to directly address what you said about glasses-- in the book, Bates talks about test programs they did in school districts where they got rid of all the kid's glasses and substituted things like reading an eye chart and his recommendations and all the kid's vision improved.  Glasses went unneeded for years.

Years later the program was sacked and the kids vision declined and they had to go back to glasses and their vision getting worst year by year so yes, not wearing glasses can help one's vision.

I had my son do the exercises in the book like reading an eye chart with the suggestions Bates had in addition to the regular vision therapy trained doctor and this I am sure also helped my son.

  2. vitamin A

Studies show that - e.g. in Nepal and other Asian countries -most people suffering from sight problems had a deficiency in vitamin A.

Their eyesight increased dramatically once they took a daily supplement of this vitamin.

Of course, this may not be helpful in all situations.

For instance, in the case of strabism, the best thing to do to improve your eyesight is to strenghten your eye muscles with specific daily exercises.

I know, for a fact, that some of my friends refused to wear glasses and trained their eyes to see afar and, in doing so, avoided wearing glasses for a long time. In one specific case, the person needed glasses only when he was in his early 50s although he was told when he was about 10 that he needed them!

    Hope this helps.

  3. As much as I wish I could say otherwise, glasses, contacts, or surgery are the only way to improve your eyesight.

I've been looking for other options for almost 20 years since I first had to get glasses and I have found things that improve the health of your eyes (which can help them from getting worse), but they can't make the actual visual acuity better. Most of them are natural herbs and vitamins that help maintain the health of the eye and I can mention a few if you'd like.

The main reason is because vision problems are a physical problem (the physical distance between the retina and lens), not a chemical problem that can be changed with drugs, herbs, or supplements :-(

I've heard of eye exercises that some people try, but based on a lot of research I've done on them, there is no basis to say that it will improve your eyesight at all. All that's left after all that is surgery or glasses/contacts. Sorry.

[edit]:  If your friend got better eyesight by not wearing glasses, that would be a fluke or a sign that your friend's eyes were just worn down and needed rest, not that they actually needed glasses.

  4. What oldtime said.

Somebody is bound to come along and recommend various "exercises", more commonly known as The Bates Method.

This will provide temporary improvement, such as when you can improve your focus by squinting, but studies have not shown  it leads to any permanent change in refractive errors.

EDIT:  The Bates Method and other similar techniques have not been studied extensively, and as with many AM techniques, anecdotes and testimonials..often from famous people, are more common than actual evidence.  However, when it has been studied, the results conclusively show that there is no detectable improvement in refraction, though people doing the exercises claim their vision is improved. (email me if you want a list of articles)

There is a very good chapter on The Bates Method in Martin Gardners classic "Fads and Fallacies" (written in 1952 and still relevant !!) where he explains in some detail Bates odd ideas on accomodation. (which he came up with after suffering some sort of mental breakdown, FYI)

He believed that the eye muscles changing the shape of the eyeball were more important than the lens focusing the image on the fovea.  The eye muscles are only involved with movement.  Yes, by squinting, one can temporarily change the shape of the eyeball, and in so doing temporarily improve focus by moving the fovea closer to the the focal point.  It is NOT a permanent change, and I would rather not have to go through life squinting...it gets tiring and makes ones face scrunch up.

This definitely is something that would be very easy to investigate in an RCT....the Bates Method advocates are more interested in marketing than proving, however.

  5. Abigal has said it all, a very informative and great post.

Until you get that eye formula reccommended by abigal, you can start by using a eye bath, with 4 drops of lemon, added to filtered water, and rinse each eye for 30seconds, look in all direction, clockwise/anti-clockwise, refill and repeat for the other eye.

I suggest you find a good local Bates Method Teacher to get the best results. The Bates Method takes much discipline to stick to the exercise routine, and new way of 'using' your eyes when using the PC or watching the TV. Since staring in one direction is an unnatural act, and causes the eyes to become dry, sore and strained, which deteriates eye sight further.

I also noticed an improvement in my eyesight {prior to implementing the Bates Method/knowledge of this}, by supplementing with Omega 3, specifically Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega 3.

Dr. Ray Sahelian MD, has this to say about omega 3 and eyesight:

'Just like the rest of the cells in the brain, the cells of the retina — the rods and the cones — contain long-chained fatty acids. The most prominent of these fatty acids in the eye is an omega-3 fatty acid called DHA. In my experience, I have found that the omega-3 oils, generally found in fish and flaxseed, enhance visual perception. I notice improved color perception and depth of vision, enhanced night and distance vision, and overall enhancement in visual awareness after several days of taking flaxseed oil or fish oil capsules. In order to notice quicker results, i.e, within two or three days, the dosages need to be significant. For instance, most people need to take several grams of a combination EPA/DHA fish oil supplement or a tablespoon or two of flaxseed oil. Once you notice an improvement, you can reduce your dosage of fish oils to one or two grams a day, or a teaspoon of flaxseed oil. Alternatively, be patient and take smaller amounts. I often prefer using lower amounts and avoiding potential side effects of supplements when they are used in high dosages.'

The way I see it, you have two options: 1) You can listen to the sceptics who have not even tried the relaxation exercises/Bates Method, and ignore this. 2) You can give it go, and make your own mind up, after all what do you have to lose, except {15-20minutes per day dedicated to relaxing your eyes}.
