  1. sleep straight on your back,

    but your probably gonna need

to go to the doctor and get a back brace (it hold your back up straight)

like braces for your teeth... a back brace

    for at night

    because when you get older

you might end up looking like the hunchback of notredame

because your back will only curve more especially when you sleep

like that. and try sleeping on your back at night. and dont curl

    no matter how bad

and practice walking straight so soon you'll get used to it

but id definitely tell the doctor you need a brace

  2. Personally i would say sleeping on your back will worsen the condition.  When you are on your back the head is pushed forward and down due to the pillow, increasing the hunch.

If you lay on your stomach when you sleep the spine will be pushed down due to gravity and your head on the will elevate the upper back slightly allowing it to be pulled down by gravity reducing the hunch.

And always use good posture, this condition may never go away but you might be able to reduce it. go see a doctor and see if he can refer you to a physical therapist that will give you exercises to do everyday.

  3. Although you say you don't have scoliosis, you have have a related problem, kyphosis.  It is a curve in the upper back but goes back-to-front rather than side-to-side.

Sleeping in a curved shape cannot cause your spine to grow curved.  I can tell you that you can get very tired living with a curved spine.  It happened to me.

I'd suggest seeing your family doctor and if (s)he says you have either scoliosis or kyphosis, get a referral to a scoliosis specialist.  A doctor without the specialty doesn't have the expertise to treat scoliosis.  (I believe that a doctor that can treat scoliosis can also treat kyphosis.)

  4. The other poster is probably wrong. It's very unlikely you need a back brace!! (It's a funny idea though.)

Sleeping on your side in a curved shape kinda thing, as you say, is not bad. The best way to sleep is on your back, flat, as the other poster said. Second best is on your side. The worst is on your stomach. Avoid that.

A hunchback develops over time. Your bones must be weak for it to occur, in addition to having bad posture. You've probably noticed many people with bad posture who don't have a hunchback!

The bump on your neck is something different, almost guaranteed. Probably just a little fatty tissue, a little cyst, etc.

What may come from your bad posture is back pain -- which is NO FUN! Try to sit up nice and straight as often as possible. You'll find yourself slouching (as I just was) and then you can remind yourself to sit up straight. Stick your chest out a bit. Just sit up straight! I had a similar problem when sitting up straight, but your posture will improve, and it won't be an issue.

Exercise will also help your general fitness and your back. Remember, hunchbacks don't even require bad posture, but they do really require a breakdown in the structure of your back. Disuse causes breakdown. If you exercise your back frequently -- just moving, walking, playing with your friends, etc. -- you'll be a lot better off.

    So, in summary, you're fine!

However, I recommend you get that exercise, try to sit straight for the sake of preventing pain, AND that you ask the doctor to give you his professional opinion. You'll probably feel better about it, and he can let you know exactly what that bump is.
